Zanzibar is a unique island that has managed to find a balance between being a hive of activity and calmness and relaxation. From the moment you get close to Zanzibar you will feel a relaxed atmosphere occupying your senses. The turquoise water of the sea and the powdery white sand beaches shaded by palm trees make this island look like a paradise. The official name of Zanzibar Island is Unguja. Zanzibar is also called the "Spice Island" due to its long history of spice plantations. There are numerous farms in the Centre of the island. Friendly guides will escort you on a walking tour, giving you information and the chance to touch and taste raw spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, ginger, and many more. Stone Town, the heart of Zanzibar, is an example of cultural fusion and harmonization. Allow yourself to get lost in the narrow labyrinth alleys to feel the influence of African, Arab, Indian, and European history. The most famous feature of the architecture is the carved wooden doors. Recently, it has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Nestled on the mountain slopes of Kilimanjaro lies the beautiful village of Materuni, located 15km on the northern part of Moshi Town, the last village before entering Kilimanjaro National. A popular activity is the village hiking and a coffee tour, where you will visit the coffee plantations, understand the origin of coffee, who discovered coffee, how and when coffee was brought to Tanzania, how to plant, harvest, and process the coffee in the center before enjoying a fresh cup of coffee made with your own hands. From Materuni Village you will walk some 45 minutes to the waterfall. The walk itself is extremely interesting, as you will see some smaller waterfalls and lots of waterways which are part of the irrigation system of the local farmers who grow coffee, bananas, and many other fruits and vegetables. At the waterfall, you can even refresh in the cool and crystal-clear water – don’t forget to bring your swimwear! Here you will also break for lunch before doing a short tour of Materuni village, where you'll be able to learn more about the typical life of Chagga tribe members. The village, located at a height of around 1600m above sea level is set within a dramatic landscape of high rises and deep valleys, all covered by tropical rainforest. Enjoy 5 nights on the remote and pristine Mafia Island, which gets its name from the Swahili phrase, “Mahali pa Afya”, which means ‘the place of good health’. Historically poor communication lines with the mainland, together with the historical fame of Zanzibar, have kept the Mafia authentic, although a steady trickle of visitors have been singing its praise, and word is getting out. Mafia has plenty of marine and beach activities to keep you active and engaged like Deep-sea fishing, bird watching, wildlife spotting, and snorkeling. Mafia Island is also one of the Indian Ocean's best places for diving and swimming with whale sharks.
