KILIMANJARO TREKKING MARANGU ROUTE
6 days of trekking and 1 night in the hotel in Arusha town/Moshi town
The Marangu route is one of the most popular routes to the summit of Kilimanjaro that allowed hikers to ascents and descend in the same routes. But also offer accommodations in huts/Wood well-designed house. This could partially be the fact that the Marangu is an inexpensive route; it is possible to do the Marangu route in 5 days, thus getting to the summit one day earlier compared to the Machame route. Though is not the best idea due to a shorter acclimatization time, we recommend at least 6 days. The difference between the Marangu 5 days and 6 days routes is the additional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut which will take you to Zebra rocks.
Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro international airport (JRO)
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Shuttle from Nairobi, you will be met and greet by our representative, assisted with your baggage, and transfer to your hotel in Arusha/Moshi Town. After a shower and rest our Tour consultant together with our mountain guide will meet with you for a comprehensive briefing of the tour, pack your mountain gears and equipment ready for trekking the next morning (it all depends on your arrival time otherwise it will be done the next day morning before departure). Meals: Breakfast Accommodation: hotel
Day 2: Moshi – Marangu Gate1860m – Mandara House 2700m
Approximately Hiking time: 4-5hours
Distance approximately 8.1 km
Habitat: Montane forest
After breakfast, Trip briefing and equipment checks for the last time before a drive from Arusha/Moshi to Marangu gate. Register at the park office, and then start hiking through the rain forest to the upper edge of the forest. Lunch will be served on the way if the weather allows, stretch to Mandara Camp approximate hiking is3-4 hours. Dinner and overnight at Mandara Hut (2715m) on FB.
Habitat found here is the montane forest. Meals: breakfast, lunch, and Dinner Accommodation: hut/ a well wood designed house as seen on the above slide photos.
Day 3: Mandara hut (2715m) – Horombo hut (3720m)
hiking Approximately time: 5-6hours
Distance approximately 11.6 km
From Mandara hut, the trail passes through a short stretch of forest, then skirts the base of the Maundi Crater, and then emerges into the transition from rain forest to moorland. Once you are in the open moorland you will get the chance to see some of Kilimanjaro’s most spectacular plants – the endemic giant lobelia which grows up to 3m in height and more. Meals: breakfast, lunch, and Dinner Accommodation: hut
Day 4: Horombo House – Acclimatization day trek to Zebra rocks
Hiking approximately time:3- 4hrs
Distance approximately 7 km uphill and 7 km downhill
Habitat: Alpine desert
This extra day and night at Horombo are for additional acclimatization. A hike towards the Mawenzi hut, passing the Zebra Rocks on the way (about 3 hours up and 1.5 hours down) is recommended. This hike will further assist with the process of acclimatization helping your body to adapt to the high altitude environment. The secret to your success is to drink enough water and move slowly pole-pole! All meals for the day are provided at the hut. Meals: breakfast, lunch, and Dinner Accommodation: hut
Day 5: Horombo hut (3720m) – Kibo hut (4700m)
Hiking approximately time: 5-6hrs
Distance approximately 9 km
Habitat: Alpine desert
after breakfast start hiking through the moorland into the alpine desert of Kilimanjaro’s upper altitudes. about an hour you will arrive at Maua River, a small mountain stream, from Maua River the terrain becomes flatter and the vegetation begins to disappear. From Horombo there are two trails to the “Saddle” (which refers to the area located between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo).
There is an upper route (right hand fork) and a lower route (left-hand fork) to choose from. The upper route (right-hand fork) will be very familiar, as you will have climbed most of it the previous day towards Mawenzi hut. It is very stony and eroded. Break for lunch at Middle Red Hill. Afterward, continue on a steady incline for another two hours through Kilimanjaro’s Saddle. Arrive at Kibo Hut rest and prepare for your midnight attempt to reach UHURU PEAK. Meals: breakfast, lunch, and Dinner Accommodation: hut
Day 6: Kibo hut (4730m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Horombo hut (3705m)
Approximately total time: 14-16 hours to reach Uhuru Peak and to descend to Horombo
total Distance approximately: 20km ascent and descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
Wake up around 23:30hrs midnight, and after some tea and biscuits you shuffle off into the night, and this is where the toughest part of the route begins, simply because it starts at midnight thus denying any trekker the sufficient rest times required. The other reason is that unlike the rest of the route, most of the climb up to the summit involves winding through scree filled slopes that make sure for everyone step up the mountain you take half a step downward.
. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5150m), also a good resting spot. The path then zigzags up to Gillman’s point (5 681m), which is located on the crater rim.
From Gillman’s Point, you will normally encounter snow all the way up to the Uhuru peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa well known as the “ROOF OF AFRICA”. Weather conditions on the summit determine how long you will spend on the Roof of Africa obvious it won’t be long, on the same day, you make a descent from the summit through Kibo huts and finally spending a night back at Horombo Huts. The total time spent walking on this day is around 14 -16hours, so be prepared for a very tough day. It’s a most challenging day but will reward you with a lifetime experience. Later in the evening, you enjoy your last dinner on Mount Kilimanjaro. Meals: breakfast, lunch, and Dinner Accommodation: hut
Day 7: Horombo House – Marangu Gate 1860m
Hiking approximately time: 5-6hours
Distance approximately 19km
After breakfast you continue your descent, passing the Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate. At
Marangu gate you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those who reached Gillman’s Point are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak receive gold certificates. Here, you will celebrate with your porters and guides, this will be the right time to give them their tips as a sign of your appreciation of their hard work. Collect your certificate and the driver will take you to the hotel in Arusha/Moshi for a hot shower and well rest before we transfer you to Kilimanjaro airport for departure flight. Up to Marangu Gate at a height of (1980m) –descending time is approximately 6 hours.
.Note: Depend on your flight schedule you can go for a Day trip into Arusha national park, Tarangire national, Lake Manyara national park, and Ngorongoro crater. There is a lot to do like extending your tour to Zanzibar for breathtaking into its white sand beach. This is the standard route, tailor-made routes are available and may follow a different schedule some do the whole route in five days while others do it in 7 days.

WHERE IS KILIMANJARO
Kilimanjaro is located in North East of Tanzania-East Africa. It is unique not only for being the highest in Africa 5895M and one of the 7 summits but for being the only free highest Standing Mountain in the world. It stands seemingly alone in the Tanzanian savannah and barded Kenya as well. Most climbers fly into Kilimanjaro airport or Jomo Kenyatta international airport and take a bus to Moshi, Arusha Tanzania to meet up with our team “Betheli Expedition’s mountain crew”.
