Climb Mount Kilimanjaro - Umbwe Route via Barafu Camp
Short Overview
Umbwe Route is the shortest to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach. It is considered to be very difficult and is the most challenging way up Mount Kilimanjaro “Uhuru Peak”. The first two days are extremely steep, muddy and generally making it only suitable for well-trained hikers. The route is offered at a minimum of 5days, though seven days is recommended when attempting this route via the western bridge.

Day 1: Arrival Kilimanjaro international airport (JRO)
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Shuttle from Nairobi, you will be met and greet by our representative, assisted with your baggage and transfer to your hotel in Arusha/Moshi Town. After a shower and rest our Tour consultant together with our mountain guide will meet with you for a comprehensive briefing of the tour, pack your mountain gears and equipment ready for trekking next morning (it all depends with your arrival time otherwise it will be done the next day morning before departure).
Overnight on bed and breakfast basis.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (JRO)
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Shuttle from Nairobi, you will be met and greet by our representative, assisted with your baggage and transfer to your hotel in Arusha/Moshi Town. After a shower and rest our Tour consultant together with our mountain guide will meet with you for a comprehensive briefing of the tour, pack your mountain gears and equipment ready for trekking next morning (it all depends with your arrival time otherwise it will be done the next day morning before departure). DAY 2: UMBWE GATE (1800M) – UMBWE CAVE CAMP (2900M)
Approximately time: 6 Hours
Distance approximately: 10 ½ km
Habitat: Forest (Montane)
The day begins with a drive to Machame Gate 2hours from Arusha & 1hour from Moshi town, after registration formalities, we then transfer through villages and coffee and banana plantations to Umbwe Gate. The path ascends sharply on a forestry track which winds up the dense rain forest covered with the mist. The path narrows and steepens as we climb the ridge between two rivers “Lonzo and Umbwe rivers”, surrounded by huge trees. Umbwe Camp is perched between trees and thick vegetation.
DAY 3: UMBWE CAVE CAMP (2900M) – BARRANCO CAMP (3980M)
Hiking time: 5-6 hours
Distance: Approximately 6 ½ km
Habitat: Moorland
Wake up early for breakfast and the start of trekking to Barranco Camp, shortly after leaving the camp rockier terrain, sparser undergrowth and straggly, moss-covered trees. The path continues along a narrow, but spectacular ridge. As you gain higher altitude, catch glimpses of Kilimanjaro rising majestically ahead of you if it is not too cloudy you will be able to see Meru Volcano for the first time. The path flattens as we approach Barranco Valley. From Umbwe ridge, the route descends to Barranco Camp through the strange but beautiful Senecio Forest. Arrive on time for lunch and then you have the opportunity to relax for the rest of the day, which benefits the acclimatization process. Overnight at Barranco Camp on FB.

DAY 4: BARRANCO CAMP (3980M) – BARAFU CAMP (4600M)
Hiking time: 6-8 hours
Distance: Approximately 9.4 km
Habitat: Alpine desert
Early wake up for breakfast and the start of summiting Barranco Wall (we recommend you leave the camp as early as possible to avoid crowds of the other groups). Hiking up the gorge wall is not difficult and only takes around an hour. After the climb, you can have a rest and take photos in front of the Kibo volcano. Then you start a more challenging hike to Karanga Camp, which features numerous ascents, on the way you will break for lunch after regaining your energy to begin your way to Barafu Summit Camp (4,600 m), the starting point for a night summiting Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Our team will set up a camp for you ahead of time, including tents and sleeping bags, so you can have sufficient time to relax. Overnight at Barafu Camp on FB.

DAY 5: ASCEND TO UHURU PEAK (5,890 m) AND DESCEND TO MILLENNIUM CAMP (3,800 m)
Approximately time: 14-16 hours to reach Uhuru Peak & descend to Millennium Camp
Approximately Distance: 4.5 km ascent and 10.8 km descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
Wake up around 23h20, and after some tea and biscuits depart from Barafu Camp (4,640 m) and start of summiting Kilimanjaro: Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Technically the climb is relatively simple; however, the most challenging part is the high altitude. Each pair of climbers will get a personal guide for the entire ascent to monitor your physical and mental conditions. After your successful ascent to Uhuru Peak, you can descend to the nearest glacier if desired. Then you will return to Barafu Camp and after a short rest proceed to Millennium Camp (3,820 m).

Day 6: DESCENTS FROM MILLENNIUM CAMP TO MWEKA GATE (1,650m)
Approximately distance: 12 km
hiking approximately time: 4–5 hours
The camp is situated in a tropical rainforest. When you wake up, you will feel relief from the reduction of the height and the satisfaction of reaching the summit. After a warm breakfast, you will head for the park’s exit “Mweka Gate 1,650m”. After your descent, the whole group will gather to congratulate you, here you will have a chance to share your feelings with the crew. Lastly, we will present you with a commemorative certificate provided by the park’s management “KINAPA” then you will be transferred back to the hotel for a hot shower and dropped off at the airport.
