The path narrows and steepens as we climb the ridge between two rivers “Lonzo and Umbwe rivers”, surrounded by huge trees. Umbwe Camp is perched between trees and thick vegetation.

Wake up early for breakfast and the start of trekking to Barranco Camp, shortly after leaving the camp rockier terrain, sparser undergrowth and straggly, moss-covered trees. The path continues along a narrow, but spectacular ridge. As you gain higher altitude, catch glimpses of Kilimanjaro rising majestically ahead of you if it is not too cloudy you will be able to see Meru Volcano for the first time. The path flattens as we approach Barranco Valley. From Umbwe ridge, the route descends to Barranco Camp through the strange but beautiful Senecio Forest.
